01 Objective

Enhance surface modeling and aircraft design skills in CATIA through a full business-jet exterior exercise.

02 Problem Statement

Aircraft exteriors combine aerodynamic surfacing with functional geometry (fuselage, nacelles, empennage), which demands a broader surfacing toolkit than automotive or consumer work alone.

03 Design Process

Using reference images, I recreated the exterior geometry of the Falcon through Image Tracing, Freestyle, Generative Shape Design, and Part Design, then applied materials and rendered the model for a realistic visualization.

04 CAD Models

Full exterior aircraft geometry built in CATIA combining Freestyle, GSD, and Part Design.

05 Design Decisions

Used Generative Shape Design specifically for the fuselage and nacelle transitions, where Freestyle alone wasn't sufficient to control the surface geometry precisely.

06 Materials

Aerospace paint-finish materials applied for the render.

07 Challenges

Controlling complex fuselage and nacelle transitions that Freestyle alone couldn't resolve, requiring Generative Shape Design.

08 Results & Outcomes

Achieved a realistic, aircraft-accurate exterior surface model of a business jet.

09 Learnings

Expanded my surfacing toolkit specifically for aerospace geometry — combining GSD with Freestyle is now a technique I reach for on any aircraft exterior work.
